Professional Leadership
My sustained engagement with professional associations reflects a deep commitment to advancing the discipline of Sociology through collaborative leadership, organisational service, and knowledge exchange. Within the South African Sociological Association (SASA), I have held several significant leadership roles that have contributed to the intellectual and operational development of the association. I served as a Member of Council from 2014 to 2020, during which I was actively involved in shaping the strategic direction and academic programming of the association. From 2015 to 2018, I took on the role of Webmaster, responsible for enhancing SASA’s digital presence and communication. I was later elected Treasurer (2018–2019), a role in which I managed financial reporting and helped ensure fiscal accountability.
In addition to these executive roles, I have contributed to SASA's intellectual agenda by organising panels and conferences. Notably, I served as Conference Organiser for the 2018 SASA Annual Conference (30 June – 4 July 2018), and also convened a specialised conference on “Engaging Young People in Non-Violence and Equality” (29–30 September 2018), demonstrating my commitment to social justice, youth engagement, and inclusive academic discourse. In 2023, I organised a thematic panel for SASA, further contributing to the vibrancy and relevance of sociological scholarship in the South African context.
At the international level, I have been an active member of the International Sociological Association (ISA), specifically in Research Committee 04 (RC04) on the Sociology of Education, since 2016. Through this involvement, I have engaged with global networks of scholars focused on the intersection of education, equity, and transformative social change. My participation in ISA RC04 reflects my commitment to advancing comparative and globally-informed sociological research, particularly in contexts shaped by postcolonial and decolonial dynamics.
These leadership roles within both SASA and ISA highlight my dedication to scholarly service, collaborative knowledge production, and the promotion of Sociology as a critical tool for social transformation, both within South Africa and in the broader global South.
